Te Maramataka — the Māori lunar calendar
The Maramataka is the Māori lunar calender, aligning with phases of the moon. Traditionally used to indicate the most productive periods for planting, fishing, eeling and other activities, the maramataka also highlights our expected energy levels and how we can tailor our lifestyle accordingly. In this case, we have adjusted the maramataka through a student lens, reflecting not only on our natural environment but on how the maramataka may influence your studies. The reason we have decided to incorporate the maramataka into our 2024 wall planner is to honour the taonga of maramataka that has been cultivated by Māori tīpuna of Aotearoa and to provide a te ao Māori viewpoint on how we can look at our year.
Mutuwhenua, Whiro and Tirea:
This phase contains the lowest energy in the lunar cycle. However, it also contains the most potential for reflection and wānanga. Nurture your wairua, surround yourself with loved ones, and take the time to evaluate things since the last new moon (Whiro).
Hoata, Ōuenuku and Okoro:
Feeling fresh from your reflection phase, energy levels are building back up. You may feel your motivation levels begin to heighten, meaning now is prime time to mentally and physically prep for upcoming kaupapa. Hit the books, the gym, or other forms of mental and physical exercise!
Tamatea Āio, Tamatea a Ngana, Tamatea Kai-Ariki and Tamatea Tūhāhā:
The Tamatea phase is widely known for its unpredictable nature. This is when your mental and physical prep comes in handy, allowing you to exercise caution as your energy levels dip up and down. Now is a great time to give back to the land, the sea, and other people, offering your tautoko when needed. Avoid making any big decisions around this time if you can!
Huna:
Stay observant and stay patient as your energy remains low. If possible, indulge in self-care as much as you can today, making sure your hauora is on point for the days ahead.
Mawharu:
Your energy is likely to go from 0 to 100 during Mawharu. Use it wisely! Cultivate that energy and do whatever needs to be done to create benefits for the future version of you.
Ohua:
Energy levels take a steep dip today. Use this time to reflect on what was achieved during the Mawharu phase, plant seeds for what’s to come, and most importantly, stay present and spend time with loved ones.
Atua Whakahaehae:
Te Rakaunui is on its way, meaning as the moon rises, your energy follows suit. Take time to rest and be mindful during this phase, amping yourself up for the high productivity about to kick in.
Turu, Te Rakaunui and Rākaumatohi:
Your energy is at its peak right now. Harness it wisely by smashing out as much mahi as you can today, whilst also taking advantage of your heightened productivity by planning ahead for future study – you’ll thank yourself later for avoiding that last-minute assessment stress.
Takirau:
Energy levels will begin to slow down in preparation for the Korekore phase. Keep at your studies but don’t burn yourself out. Allow yourself to take a breath, relax, and keep in tune with your emotions.
Oike:
You can’t control when assignments are due, but you can control how you manage your hauora when you’re under the pump. Your energy is continuing to wind down, so take plenty of breaks today if you need.
Korekore Tuatahi, Rawea and Whakapiri:
The Korekore phase is one of low energy. Don’t feel guilty for not being as productive as you could be. It’s okay to have slower periods and rest. Try to incorporate mindfulness within this period and ensure you’re prepared for the high energy to come.
Tangaroa ā mua, Tangaroa ā roto, Tangaroa Whakapau and Tangaroa Whāriki Kiokio:
Like Tangaroa’s waves, your energy will begin to surge again. You may find that your creativity flows more naturally, you’re more open to exchanging kōrero and ideas with others, and that your productivity is coming back into play. There may be highs and lows, just make sure to take notice and go with the flow.
Ōtane, Ōrongonui and Ōmutu:
The Tangaroa phase has left you on a high. Ōtane and Ōrongonui are ideal times to bring ideas to fruition and get things done. Once you reach Ōmutu, prepare yourself for a period of recharging and resting in light of the Whiro phase soon to arrive.
